REFLECTION

What have I learnt in this module?
In this course, I have gained a new understanding of design principles. Through the exploration of Task 1, I have gained an in-depth understanding of design principles including Gestalt theory, contrast, emphasis, balance, repetition, movement, harmony & unity, symbol, word and image. These theories provided the foundational framework for my future designs. In Task 2, I chose ‘Void’ by avogado6 for visual analysis, which developed my ability to observe and interpret works of art, while further deepening my understanding of design principles. Task 3 allowed me to apply what I had learnt in practice. When it came to the final development stage, I applied these theories to my own creations, and although there were many revisions and adjustments during the process, it was still very rewarding to finally see my designs take shape.

What did I enjoy the most?
I actually probably enjoyed the visual analysis of task2 more than the process of designing it myself in task3. When I was looking for the creations of my favourite artists, I tried to analyse the design principles used in these works one by one, and found that the drawing of these works contained careful design, and this kind of discovery and exploration of beauty was very enjoyable to me!

What did I not enjoy the most?
If I were to say the least enjoyable part, it would probably be the revision process. Every time I receive feedback, although I know that revising can make the work better, sometimes I get a little frustrated when I still can't achieve what I want after a few revisions. But looking back, this process is actually very important, and it has taught me how to adjust my mindset and patiently polish my work.

What have I learnt about myself through this module?
This study has made me realise that I actually enjoy the process of observing and analysing works, and I also like to express my emotions through design. However, I also find that my creative expression is sometimes not bold enough and can be a bit restrained, so I hope to be more daring to try out different styles and ideas in the future.
I also find it easy to miss things, for example, when designing my own work, I often miss some details. Adding things over and over again causes my efficiency to decrease quite a bit, so I'll try to correct that in the future!

What has changed and what has not in my learning journey?
What has changed: I think about design in a more structured way now than I did at the beginning. Instead of just going with my intuition, I will take the initiative to analyse, dismantle and optimise my work. I am also more observant, and when I look at a piece of work, I can't help but think about how the author composed the image, matched the colours, and applied the design principles.
What hasn't changed: I'm still passionate about visual expression and love to convey emotions and stories through design.

What are my aspirations?
I want to use all the knowledge I've learnt to make a game for a character I've designed! This includes a storyline, illustrations, uiux, and possibly a small amount of animation. I see this as a huge challenge and I need to work on my drawing skills and my ability to use software. It might be a bit hard, but at least it's something I've always wanted to achieve.
