TASK 3: Development & Design

Sketches & Work Progress
In Task 1 I selected an artwork for all the task. Here is my chosen artwork :
Fig.1.24: Void by avogado6
Year: 2019
Size: 3501*2917px
Therefore, the design in Task 3 will refer to the design principles and art style used by the artwork.

Fig.1.1: Sketches
Sketch 1 (Task 2 Fig. 1.2: Sketch 1): using pencil I have the grey figures around holding a full red balloon facing the audience and the main character in the middle facing the audience with a broken balloon in his hand.
Sketch 2 (Task 2 Fig. 1.3: Sketch 2): also using pencil, I made the people around the main character wear light bulb hoods, the main character's head is not on his hand.
Sketch 3 (Task 2 Fig. 1.4: Sketch 3): again using pencil, for sketch 3, I had the people around the protagonist wearing smiley face masks with red balloons in their hands, facing the protagonist who was sitting on the ground holding his knees.

I think sketch 1 is more similar to the meaning and atmosphere expressed in the original Fig.1.24: Void by avogado6. I also want to show the loneliness and difference of the protagonist. So I decided to select Sketch 1 in Fig.1.1 Sketches for elaboration.

Chosen Sketch (Sketch 1)
Fig.1.2: Sketch 1
For this Fig.1.2: Sketch 1, I referenced the chosen artwork Fig.1.24: Void by avogado6 and continued to use the design principles of repetition and emphasis. I chose to use pencil for the sketch and have the protagonist standing in the middle of the open space with repetitive grey shadows around them, this achieves both repetition and emphasis and accentuates the loneliness of the protagonist even more.

Refining sketch to Line Art
Fig.1.3: Line Art ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil )
I drew lines in procreat used the Pencil Brush by referring to the composition and ideas in Sketch 1 (Task 2 Fig.1.2: Sketch 1). To highlight the repetition, I chose to use copy-paste for people facing away from the audience. It's more unified.

Shadow Drawing Process
Fig.1.4: Shadow drawing process 1 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil )
Since I don't have a lot of color in my work, I decided to draw shadows first.
Referring to the way of painting in the chosen artwork Fig.1.24: Void by avogado6, I could clearly see the texture of the pencil brushes, so I decided to use only pencils throughout the Procreat painting.
First,in Fig.1.4: Shadow drawing process 1 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil ) the person facing away from the audience is darker than the main character.
Fig.1.5: Shadow drawing process 2 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil )
And then in Fig.1.5: Shadow drawing process 2 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil ) I made sure that the light source came from the top left corner so that I could draw the shadow better.
Fig.1.6: Shadow drawing process 3 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil )
Going for dimension, I decided to add a third layer of the darkest colour shade in
Fig.1.6: Shadow drawing process 3 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil ). At the same time, this will make the grey shadows darker thus enhancing the contrast with the main character in the middle and showing the emphasis better.
Fig.1.7: Shadow drawing process 4 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil )
In the end, in
Fig.1.7: Shadow drawing process 4 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil ) I decided to use the lightest grey in the frame for the main character's shading, which effectively prevents the main character from getting mixed up with the grey shadows.

Colouring Progress
Fig.1.8: Colouring Progress 1 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil )
After finishing the shadows I started to colour the balloons in Fig.1.8: Colouring Progress 1 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil ), to show that the balloons represent energy and vitality I chose the same red colour for the balloons as in the chosen artwork Fig.1.24: Void by avogado6.
Fig.1.9: Colouring Progress 2 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil )
To make the balloons look more like symbols of vitality,in Fig.1.9: Colouring Progress 2 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil ) I decided to refine the texture of the balloons and make them crystal clear.
Fig.1.10: Colouring Progress 3 ( Tool: Procreat Brush: Pencil )
I tried a balloon refinement first and it worked well. So I refined the other balloons to look the same.
Fig.1.11: Application of Multiply Layers
Fig.1.12: Before and after using Multiply Layers
Finally, I noticed that the shadows on the figure in the original Fig.1.24: Void by avogado6 were with ambient light: warm tones on the lighted side and cool tones on the shadowed side. So I decided to use Multiply layers to add the ambient colour in Fig.1.11: Application of Multiply layers.
Fig.1.13: Reduction of transparency
In order to increase the emphasis on the middle character, in Fig.1.13: Reduction of transparency I reduced the transparency of the stroke of the surrounding grey character a bit.

Final Outcome of Task 3 (PDF)
Fig.1.14: Solitude I have drawn this piece in a similar style to that of Fig.1.24: Void by avogado6. In this painting I wanted to express an emotion of loneliness and alienation. The character in the centre of the image is the only one with clear facial features and bright colours, giving off a lonely, detached atmosphere. The red balloons in the hands of those around them symbolise energy, love and and hope. But the main character's balloon has withered, signalling loneliness and hurt.I tried to convey a mournful emotion of being isolated from the group and out of place in the world.

Fig.1.15: Solitude analysis
In Fig.1.15: Solitude analysis I have used the design principles of emphasis and repetition.
Emphasis is placed on the character in the centre of the picture, who is the only one with clear facial features, bright colours and holding the broken balloon.
At the same time, I repeat the surrounding grey figures, all of whom have no facial features and each of whom is holding an identical red heart-shaped balloon.
(I also used some contrast in this painting, I thought that the red heart shaped balloon and the grey and white colours around it would provide a contrast.)

Week 6
General feedback: The blog should include a detailed drawing process to prove that it is your own work.
Specific feedback: In the blog, I write down the painting tools I use, the pictures I draw, and the meanings I want to express.

Week 7
General feedback: Write a final reflection in the blog as required by the MIB.
Specific feedback: Good job on the part of documenting the process inside the blog, and remember to write about FINAL REFLECTION.
