REFLECTION
Experience
Taking the typography course was a transformative journey that deepened my appreciation and understanding of the art and science behind type design. From the very first class, I was captivated by the intricate details and history of typography. The hands-on projects were particularly enlightening, as they allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios. Creating my own typefaces and experimenting with different fonts in various design contexts was both challenging and rewarding.
Observations
Throughout the course, I observed a few key patterns and insights.Different typefaces evoke different feelings and responses from the audience. For instance, serif fonts tend to convey tradition and reliability, while sans-serif fonts often appear modern and clean. Another important observation was the necessity of attention to detail. This course also allows me to think about the principle and feasibility of typography when I see it in my life.
Findings
I've developed a range of software skills — including proficiency in Illustrator, InDesign, and FontLab. I've honed my typography skills, mastering kerning, weighting, and line spacing. Additionally, I've picked up various useful details — such as paragraph spacing techniques, font embedding practices, and even some quick tricks for appearing camera-ready on short notice.
