LECTURES

Week 7
Mr.Hafiz Zamri explained to us how the next task should be done, that we should make a few animated changes based on the album art.

Double-Check Motion Asset Render Settings
To ensure correct output settings for codec and audio output, we highly recommend matching these settings when using After Effects, Premiere, or Media Encoder.

After Effects Settings
Match the Video Output settings: Apple ProRes 4444 and Audio Output Off.

Album Page Motion 3x4 Template
This template appears only on iPhone. Keep essential elements within the safe area so they don’t intersect with the iPhone notch, UI text, buttons, and gradient.
Album Page Motion 1x1 Template
These templates appear on iPad, Mac, and smart TVs. The entire canvas of the Album Page Motion 1x1 is safe to place artwork. There are no UI elements that need to be considered.

Composition Theory 3 // Fore, Mid, and Background
Introduction to Composition
Definition of Composition
Composition refers to how your image is put together. By using certain tricks, you can enhance your art and capture your audience’s attention.

Foreground, Middle-ground, and Background
Fig.1.0 foreground,middle-ground, and background
Importance
When composing a scene, creating an effective sense of space is crucial. This involves illustrating elements within your image to communicate a sense of scale to the viewer.
Types of Planes
Foreground: Objects nearest to the viewer.
Middle-ground: Objects in between the foreground and background.
Background: Objects furthest away from the viewer.

Arranging Subject Matter
Fig.1.1 DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANES
Foreground Focus:
o Arrange the subject matter in the foreground using size differences and color contrast to highlight it as the main focus.
o Example: "Adventure Time" (Cartoon Network, 2010).
Middle-ground Focus:
o Arrange the focus in the middle-ground using size differences and light/shadow contrast.
o Example: "Adventure Time" (Cartoon Network, 2010).
Background Focus:
o Arrange the focus in the background using shapes and light/shadow contrast.
o Example: "Adventure Time" (Cartoon Network, 2010).

Design Flow
Definition
Design flow refers to how your eye moves or is led around a composition. A good design flow will lead the viewer’s eye throughout the layout, moving from element to element with ease.
Fig.1.2 Design Flow
Importance
Influences how the viewer digests content, especially important in interface and information design where type, line, contrast, color, and images must be combined.
Example
The Soloists: A dark comedy animation short by Gobelins (2021) using 2D/CG medium. It tackles social injustice with a gentle touch and playful style, using layering of foreground, middle-ground, and background to drive the story and enhance storytelling.

Week8
It's independent study week. No lectures.

Week9
Three components
1. WHERE WILL THE VIEWER'S EYES INITIALLY LAND (THE FOCAL POINT)?
2. WHERE IS THE UKELY SECOND PLACE THE VIEWERS EYE WILL MOVE TO?
3. WHERE WILL THE VIEWER'S EYE FINALLY END UP?

· The vast majority of designs will loosely use 1 of 2 techniques to form the basis of hierarchy.
Fig.1.0 Two composition method
· The change in size makes it more obvious and easy for the viewer to see.
Here's a really good way for structuring hierarchy in terms of 'size' on your designs.
1. The hook (hook=largest)
2. The secondery detail
3. The finisher

Week10
No lecture this week.

EXERCISE
Assignment : Fly Me To The Moon
Initial storyline
This song reminds me of a love story, the feelings of the man and the woman are deep, romantic like a fairy tale. So I decided to make my cover look like a fairy tale. The host and hostess sit on top of the container, looking at the moon in front of them, the stars twinkling. It was as if they could see distant dangers and planets, and they had a desire to play among the stars. But being so close, they seemed to swim happily among the stars.

Ideas + sketches
We need to choose one song from the list below, appreciate the song, hear it through and understand the lyrics. You are then required to sketch initial ideas , figure out  storyline, illustrate and compose and animate a ‘moment’ base of your understanding from the chosen song. This moment will be the album cover. Illustrated typography must be included.

I chose the song: fly me to the moon.
The first time I heard this song, I thought of an rpg I had played before called To the Moon.
This is a love story about the wish to go to the moon, and I felt particularly appropriate so I looked up some game images online for reference.

Here are some requirements of this assignment.
Fig.2.0.1 Requirements

So based on these references, I drew my sketch.
Fig.2.1 Sketch

Illustration
I first set up an initial composition and color matching, drew a semicircle shape and then searched the Internet for moon footage to add textures.
Fig.2.2 Progress1
Then I added gradients and adjusted the gradients color to try to create a halo for the moon, and added noise to make it look more textured.
Fig.2.3 Progress2
Then I started adding some strong men to try to make the sky look less monotonous.
Fig.2.4 Progress3
Finally, I added characters and used the gradient tool to create a polka-dot effect to add a pop art feel.
Fig.2.5 Progress4
I ended up adding the song title, using the pencil tool to make shapes and adding rocket graphics to make the title more interesting.
Fig.2.6 Final work
For the next step of animation, I am going to make the pattern in the sky move.

Final animation gif
I want the three elements of my title star and heroine's hair to be animated.
So I started working in my Ai, trying to make their animation look more coherent, and I also had to think about making it an animation that could loop forever, which was a little bit more challenging for me.
Fig.2.7 Process in PS
At first I decided to make the moon's halo move too, but when I got the time, it was too messy! So I gave up on the hidden changes in the halo.
After a few tweaks to the image (which really freaked me out a bit) I finally got the look I wanted.

Lab 4: Illustrated Type
In the 10th week class, Sir Asked us to try font deformation. Here is my work.To make my "fish" look less monotonous, I also added gradients to the tail.
Fig.2.9 Process

Fig.2.10 Exercise
We also did another exercise in class. This mainly teaches us the use of image tracing and extension, as well as text and pencil tools along the path. I have to say this is very useful! It will help me a lot with the rest of my mission.

Reflections
This mission is very interesting for me. Designing album covers, that sounds like a great way to cheer me up. I have a lot of fun working with illustrator to digitize drafts. However, the process of animation production was a little difficult, I had to try again and again whether my animation was smooth enough, which made me collapse. All in all, I still learned a lot from this task, and I can use these software more skillfully to design, which makes me very happy.

Feedback
Week7
I started sketching this week, based on a lot of inspiration for the game To the moon. At first I wanted to use some graphics from the game to accomplish my mission, but I felt that was a bit lazy, so I just borrowed the story and started to come up with the composition.

Week9
I'm experimenting with digital this week. I wanted to feel like a pixel game, so I used contrasting colors purple and yellow. In my opinion, such colors can bring out the fairytale romance in the background of my story.
In addition, I also made use of the material tool to make pop-like dots spread on the picture to make it look more rich.

Week10
This week I started animating, and since I haven't touched After Effect yet, I chose to use Photoshop to complete it. But my Photoshop keeps crashing, which frustrates me too. Trying to make these movements less rigid one by one was, I would say, the most challenging task I've ever done.
